Beautifully paced. Wonderfully scenic.
The best of your original Route 2, with its generous Wānaka stay preserved and Milford Sound added through an overnight in Te Anau.
Our road-trip loop
Christchurch → Lake Tekapo → Aoraki/Mount Cook → Wānaka → Queenstown → Te Anau → Milford Sound → Twizel → Christchurch
One day at a time.
An easy-to-follow plan. Each day lists the essentials first; extra stops are tucked away so the schedule stays calm.
The little things that matter.
On driving days
Times are estimates without lengthy scenic stops. Share the driving, use rest breaks and allow extra time on mountain roads. Avoid the three-hour post-flight drive if the driver feels tired.
Live road conditions ↗For Milford Sound
Fill up and pick up snacks in Te Anau. Expect around 2 hours each direction before photo stops. Weather may affect road access and cruises.
DOC Milford Road information ↗For our hikes
Bring layers, rain jackets, comfortable shoes and water. Hooker Valley Track is approximately 10 km return / 3 hours in normal conditions. Pick a shorter Mount Cook walk if needed.
DOC Hooker Valley Track ↗For the flight home
Stay in Christchurch on 27 March. Return the hire car according to rental-company arrangements and allow sufficient time for the early international departure on 28 March.
Christchurch Airport ↗A few decisions, then relax.
Book ahead
Accommodation (especially Easter weekend), rental car, Milford cruise, Tekapo stargazing, and any Te Anau glowworm cave tour. Optional: Queenstown gondola, lake cruise, Mount Cook scenic flight.
Keep flexible
Pick Diamond Lake or Mount Iron based on conditions. Glenorchy is a lovely optional drive, not a compulsory detour. Save extra cafés, short walks and small towns for when everyone feels like stopping.
